Saturday 6th July windsurf * walk **** - crap to start wild, wet and windy
then sunny late :)
What a bloody awful day! It blew a gale all night and lashed it down with
rain and it didn’t really stop until mid afternoon! Cancelled our
crossing to Harris because it is too rough! We were thoroughly p***ed
off!!! Had a long lie in then played cards 9 games of Lost Cities. I
decided to go sailing and instead of going out earlier when the weather was
really bad rainy and strong winds with poor visibility when I think I could
have got some fast speeds along the exposed island stretching along way
offshore I waited to after lunch – wrong!!! It was still gusting nearly
30 mph so rigged the 5.8 and took the 100 lt. and only just got going so
returned and rigged 7.5 and took the 133 lt. and was so’ooooooooooooo
cross as the wind had gone and I had miles of flat water to play in –
this is a top speed spot and I just sat in the van during the windy part of
the day but I was nervous going out somewhere new in such strong conditions
– should have been braver!!! I sailed out about a mile turned and could
hardly see the beach and then had the plod all the way in as the wind
dropped and swung off. I was lucky to get ashore all be it at the other end
of the bay, shame really as this is a top spot – pity I didn’t find it
a couple of days ago!!!
IT CLEARED UP AND THE SUN CAME OUT!!! Just as the weather forecast on
Mag’s phone said it would!!! We went for a long walk along the beach and
up across the hills to look down on the other side of Berneray Island :)
Lovely to see the sun – it brings the colours out so much more and makes
it a very beautiful place again. Walked back to the van and had pasta for
tea with the door open and beautiful views over to Harris :)
Sunday 7th July – travelling (ferry to Harris) sightseeing - cloudy
Packed up and drove over to the beach on the other side of the island –
Borve. It was really beautiful and 3 miles long. Only us and another
family as far as the eye could see! The sun even came out :) We had to
stop on the road as we drove off because there were two terns and their
tiny baby chick in the middle of the road – the cutest little thing I
have ever seen!! We went to the ferry terminal and filled up with water
and walked to the end of the jetty while we waited. Had a very calm
crossing – glad we waited and didn’t go yesterday! Saw lots of birds
and a few seals but nothing new. No fins! Ate our crisp sandwiches on
board – supplies are running low! Arrived at Leverburgh about 2 and
drove round to the church at Rodel. It is a lovely stone church and we
were able to go up the tower. There were stone tombs with soldiers carved
on the top so an interesting visit. The road up the east coast was like a
roller coaster! Very narrow and very steep up and down. The scenery was
like the moon, lots of odd shaped grey rocks to the left and the rocky
coast to the right. There was absolutely nowhere to stop until we got
nearly to Tarbert which is where the ferry to sky leaves from. There was a
piece of disused road that looked promising but we decided to go and have a
look at Tarbert then finding nothing there we came back to park between two
lochs. It is quite amazing scenery in a rugged kind of way! I walked down
the road to take photos of the water and Mag had a look at the lochs around
the van. Played several hands of lost cities
